«The history of studying medieval old Turkic inscriptions of Mountains Altai is almost two hundred years. G.I.Spassky found the first Altai inscription near the river Charysh in 1818. Since then searching and studying of epitaphic monuments is conducted in Altai. And it is going with variable success. To the beginning of 90s of XX century it became obvious, that Altai is a region of wide circulation of inscriptions. It raises Altai to one line with Khakassia, Tuva and Mongolia. Efforts of archeologists during the previous period had been opened three large centers of concentration of medieval inscriptions. First of all, the Jalbak-Taš - the largest rock with inscriptions in Russia. Haya-Bazha was the lagest before in Tuva, where 16 inscription lines were found. …There can be allocated four micro-districts of distribution old Tukic writings in Altai Mountains preliminarily: The inscriptions near the rivers Ursul and Karakol, inscriptions of Southeast Altai and inscriptions of Ust-Kan group. Some findings in other areas assume presence of unknown inscriptions. Purposeful researches inevitably should lead to new openings. |
Field works of last years on search, fixings epigraphic inscriptions of Altai Mountains have revealed a number of rules, typical for the region. Now it is known three kinds of inscriptions in Altai Mountains. The first kind is the inscriptions put at the basis of the rocks. They usually have intimate, secret character. They are carried to IX-X centuries. The second kind is inscriptions on steles. They undoubtedly are epitaphic inscriptions, which have appeared in Altai Mountains under influence of tradition of the population of Tuva and Khakassia in IX-X centuries 3. And the last kind of inscriptions are the texts put on subjects which are found in early-medieval burials of VIII-IX centuries.» |
